Sweet Tooth Marshmallows: A family business with heart and flavour
When Patrick Dale, was just 10 years old, he asked his mum Cara, “Why aren’t there any chocolate marshmallows, and why do these ones have so little flavour?”. The tween didn’t realise that innocent conversation would spark an entrepreneurial journey for the whole family. But that question in the supermarket aisle back in November 2021 was the beginning of Sweet Tooth Marshmallows, a family business with a knack for creating award-winning treats – and a whole lot of joy for its customers.
Cut to just a few short years later, the Dale family are celebrating not just the success of their handcrafted creations but also recognition as a finalist in the 2024 Australia’s Favourite Family Business competition.
A family adventure with marshmallows at the heart
The business journey began during the Christmas season of 2021 with mother-son kitchen experiments. Cara and Patrick spent weekends testing different sugars and techniques to get just the right texture and flavour.
“Those early experiments were precious moments,” Cara reflects. “Patrick and I worked together, analysing and discovering the art of marshmallow making. We developed a recipe versatile enough to incorporate any flavour, whether powder, liquid, or paste.”
The enthusiasm from friends and family encouraged them to take the next step. In January 2022, Sweet Tooth Marshmallows made its debut at local markets, where customers couldn’t get enough of the cloud-soft, full-flavoured treats. And it wasn’t just Patrick and Cara driving the business forward – the whole family found their roles in the process.
“Our daughter Christa shaped our brand identity, from naming the business to designing the logo,” says Cara. “And Glen – my husband – is our dedicated taste-tester and market ambassador. He’s mastered the art of cutting, dusting, dipping, and packaging, while handing out samples and delighting customers at markets.”
Market days have become a true family affair, with Cara, Glen, and Patrick working together to introduce customers to the marshmallows they love to make.
Sweet Tooth: Innovation wrapped in flavour
The Dales’ marshmallows aren’t your average supermarket fare. With flavours ranging from Strawberry and Vanilla Bean Lamington to Chocolate Rum and Raisin, Sweet Tooth Marshmallows has redefined the humble marshmallow. Their signature Chocolate Marshmallow even took out a Gold Medal at the 2023 Sydney Royal Fine Food Awards, officially making it Australia’s best marshmallow.
“Patrick’s creative vision and entrepreneurial spirit are what drive us,” Cara explains. “He’s always dreaming up new flavour combinations that we bring to life through careful experimentation.”
It’s this dedication to innovation and craftsmanship that has helped them earn multiple awards, including silver and bronze medals at national competitions. But their success is about more than just great recipes – it’s also about listening to their customers.
“Each new flavour reflects a mix of our creativity and our community’s feedback,” Cara says. “We’re always aiming to create something that sparks joy and brings people together.”

Building a sweet legacy
Running a family business comes with its share of challenges – especially when two of the key team members, Patrick and Christa, are still in high school. While Cara and Glen have managed to juggle late nights in the kitchen with the demands of their other consultancy business, all while maintaining a healthy balance between work and family life.
“Our growth has been carefully planned to ensure we maintain both quality and family time,” Cara shares. “We’re now at a point where Glen can dedicate one full day each week to Sweet Tooth Marshmallows, which feels like a huge milestone for us.”
What makes the Dales’ journey particularly inspiring is that they’ve stayed true to Patrick’s original business plan, which he created when he was just 11 years old.
“This business isn’t just about marshmallows,” Cara says. “It’s about showing our children the power of turning dreams into reality and teaching them valuable lessons about entrepreneurship, dedication, and family collaboration.”
A finalist’s dream
Being recognised as a finalist in Australia’s Favourite Family Business competition feels like a significant achievement for the Dales.
“This is our second entrepreneurial venture as a family, and it really speaks to our resilience and growth,” Cara reflects. “It’s not just a business milestone – it’s deepened our family bonds and brought us closer together.”
The Dales have big plans for the brand. With a website launch in the works and new opportunities on the horizon, they’re ready to share their gourmet marshmallows with more families across Australia.
“This recognition inspires us to dream bigger,” Cara says. “It’s a chance to learn from other family businesses and contribute to the vibrant community we’re proud to be part of.”
The sweetest success
For the Dales, winning Australia’s Favourite Family Business would be more than just a title – it would be a celebration of all the hard work, late nights, and little victories that have made Sweet Tooth Marshmallows what it is today.
“Every challenge we’ve overcome and every success we’ve celebrated together has brought us to this point,” Cara reflects. “Winning would fuel our dream of bringing our marshmallows to homes across Australia and beyond, turning this family passion into a national brand.”
What started as a simple question in a supermarket aisle has grown into a thriving business, built on creativity, love, and a whole lot of marshmallows. And as they continue to grow, the Dales are proving that the sweetest success is the kind that’s shared with family.
