Regional Heroes: How Gilberton is rewriting the rulebook on luxury in the outback

450km west of Townsville, in the wild heart of outback Queensland, you’ll find Gilberton Outback Retreat. It’s a five-star luxury escape perched smack-bang in the middle of a working cattle station. It’s remote, rugged, and ridiculously beautiful. But what makes it truly special is the people behind the business.

Run by Lyn French and her family, Gilberton Outback Retreat is a seventh-generation cattle station with a hospitality twist. It’s what happens when graziers with a dream decide to do things a little differently.

“The lightbulb moment came when I realised no one had ever created anything like this in the Australian outback, a completely private, stand-alone, five-star retreat, fit for a king or queen,” Lyn says.

And she wasn’t wrong. As far as she can tell, it’s the only one of its kind in the country.

From cattle dust to fine dining

Gilberton is a cattle station first, and Lyn is the first to admit she had no background in tourism when the idea came to life.

“We weren’t hoteliers. We were graziers with a dream, a deep love for our land, and a belief that the outback could offer something no city ever could,” she says.

And so they built it. With no roadmap, no mentors, and plenty of dust. “Yes!! I’ve juggled guests, cattle work, mud, drought, and fine dining all in the same day!” she laughingly tells Business Builders.

It turns out that when you combine outside-the-box thinking with determination and a genuine love for the land, you get something magical. From day one, guests were hooked.

“From the very beginning, it was an instant success. Our guests were captivated by the exclusive, world-class experience we offered, and word quickly spread.”

Bridging the bush and the big world

While Gilberton’s five-star finishings are pretty impressive). It’s the deep connection to country that keeps guests coming back for more. This isn’t some fly-in-fly-out resort. It’s a family story, seven generations strong.

“This land, these stories, and the people we meet, they’re what I treasure most,” shares Lyn.

The retreat has brought international attention to a part of Queensland most wouldn’t think to visit.

“Our retreat has helped put our remote region on the map as a destination for luxury and authentic outback experiences.”

And it’s not just about tourism dollars.

“By bringing high-end tourism to this part of Australia, we’ve supported local businesses, from suppliers, helping diversify the local economy.”

Doing it their way

The challenge when you’re the first to do something is that there’s no guidebook.

“There was no roadmap, and the tourism industry initially didn’t know how to work with us because we were so unique,” Lyn explains.

So Lyn says they made their own rules. No cookie-cutter packages, no chasing trends.

“Everything we offer is grounded in authenticity.”

That means five-star privacy and service, yes, but also connection to the land, to the people, and to something bigger. Many guests describe their stay as a “magical detox”.

“We watched visitors to our station relax in ways they didn’t even know they needed. The land worked its quiet magic, people slowed down, breathed deeper, and left feeling lighter,” says Lyn.

Remote but not removed

Despite its location, or maybe because of it, Gilberton has built a loyal following. “Ninety-five per cent of our guests come to us through word of mouth, which says so much about the experience we offer.”

Lyn says guests often become part of the extended family, staying in touch long after their visit ends.

“We build strong, genuine relationships. We keep in touch through personal messages, social media, and updates from the station…

“In a place where every visit is intentional, connection matters more. The remoteness doesn’t limit us. It strengthens the bonds we form.”

A retreat with heart

Lyn is quick to express that the business isn’t just a flash in the pan. Gilberton’s retreat has staying power. ot because they’ve expanded wildly, but because they’ve stayed true to what matters.

“We’ve reached the peak of our visionary growth, creating a retreat that stands alone as a five-star luxury experience in the outback, exactly as we dreamed.”

Now, she says,  it’s about quality over quantity.

“Rather than expanding further, we’re committed to refining what we do best, ensuring every stay is unforgettable and every visitor feels the magic that makes our retreat truly unique.”

Doing it the hard way

People are often surprised to learn just how hands-on this journey has been.

“We built a world-class, five-star retreat in the middle of the outback with no background in tourism, no guidebook to follow, and all while running a working cattle station.”

They were told it wouldn’t work – too remote, too ambitious. “But we proved them wrong.”

They’ve hosted royalty and celebrities, but it’s the everyday guests who bring Lyn the most satisfaction.

“Seeing their faces light up as they experience the outback’s magic is what truly makes this work so rewarding,” she tells Business Builders.

Building a business from scratch

“There were no mentors, no guideposts, and not many who understood or believed in what we were trying to do. We were creating something that hadn’t been done before out here, and that meant carving our own path, often alone.”

But once the success came, support followed. Now, Lyn’s the one encouraging others to go for it.

“While we may not have had mentors, we became our own, and now we’re proud to be that encouragement for others dreaming big in the bush.”

So, what’s next for Gilberton Retreat? The plan isn’t to build more. It’s to keep doing what they do, only do it better.

“Now, our focus is on sustaining that high standard, nurturing the deep connections we have with our guests, and continuing to offer an unparalleled experience that honours the land and our heritage,” shares Lyn.

Lyn says being recognised as a Regional Hero finalist is incredibly humbling..

“It’s a wonderful acknowledgement not just of our business, but of the hard work, resilience, and passion that goes into running something truly unique in the outback,” says Lyn.

“It feels like a celebration of the land we love, the community we’re part of, and the dream we’ve chased against the odds.”

Lyn’s advice for other entrepreneurs? Believe in yourself.

“Back yourself – because if you don’t, no one else will at the start. If you’ve got a vision, don’t let doubt or distance stop you.

“There’ll be challenges… but if you stay true to your purpose, the rewards are incredible.”

“Build genuine relationships, lean into your community, and don’t be afraid to do things differently.”

“Most importantly – don’t forget why you started. That passion will carry you through.”
