Plastic Free July: Meet the mum on a mission to save the planet
If you’ve been giving plastic waste and global warming the brush off, it’s time to take notice and join millions of Australians making a choice to minimise their plastic use this July according to Brush it On, co-founder Viv Rames.
It was upon learning that there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050, that (then) pregnant mum Viv and her BFF Alice Moir were inspired to found Brush it On.
Following a successful indiegogo campaign, the duo established Brush it On as a social enterprise to provide consumers with more conscious product choices that save the environment without sacrificing quality. Rames says 100 per cent of the brand’s profits go to supporting environmental projects. With consumers able to route the profits by their choice of product to save either forests, oceans or animals.
The duo kicked off the brand with a range of bamboo toothbrushes. Each one lovingly crafted and designed by a conservationist artist. Nemo, for example, has been created by Melbourne artist Abbey Rich. By choosing ‘Oceans’ consumers support the Australian Marine Conservation Society. Every four bamboo toothbrushes purchased helps distribute a living plastic-free pack to raise awareness around plastic pollution. Similarly, ‘Tarzan’ by local artists Samuel Humphreys supports the World Land Trust to protect the world’s rainforests. Every single toothbrush contributes to the buy an acre program. While Lassie by Marc Allante helps fund world animal protection.
“Our bamboo toothbrushes were purposefully designed by conservation artists to help protect the world’s oceans, forests, and animals,” Rames says. “We aim to help people make conscious choices without sacrificing their lifestyle.
Plastic toothbrushes are one of the biggest contributors to plastic pollution, amounting to approximately 1,000 tonnes of landfill each year in Australia alone. To encourage you to ditch your plastic brush and opt for a more environmentally friendly solution Brush it On is offering consumers the opportunity to swap their plastic toothbrushes for bamboo brushes for just $1 to start their own plastic-free journey. This Plastic Free July.
“The reality of going plastic-free can be tough but we believe that looking after the environment doesn’t have to be a luxury, it can actually help people save money. Our 2020 #PlasticFreeJuly campaign is all about raising awareness of common plastic items that can easily be replaced.
“With plastic toothbrushes being one of the symbols of plastic pollution, we want to help Australians get on their plastic-free journey. Looking after the environment shouldn’t be a luxury and we want everyone to be able to swap.”
To celebrate Plastic Free July the pair have also developed a Waste Less Save More guide filled with money-saving eco-aware tips from environmentally conscious Australian brands and influencers to help the community go green on a budget.
