Family first: How My Creative Box sparks creativity and connection for kids and families
For Leanne Papadopoulos, a mother of three and a former kindergarten teacher, creating My Creative Box was a personal journey that began with an annoying craft experience.
“The idea sparked when I bought a craft kit for my child that led to tears and frustration—tiny instructions, overwhelming materials, and none of it age-appropriate,” she recalls. “That experience pushed me to research how art and craft, when done right, can greatly benefit children’s development.”
From this thought a bigger idea began to form. Determined to make creative activities that parents and kids could enjoy stress-free, Leanne envisioned a line of craft kits that offered fun, educational experiences with everything families need in one place.
“I wanted to bridge that gap, creating fun, engaging, and educational activities that families could enjoy together, with all the tools they need right at their fingertips,” she explains.
From that vision, My Creative Box was born; a creative solution that is now earning recognition as a finalist in Australia’s Favourite Family Business 2024 competition.
Getting hands-on with learning
Leanne says My Creative Box has a unique vision: to inspire creativity while supporting key educational milestones.
“We’re a children’s brand on a mission to inspire creativity while supporting educational development,” Leanne explains. “Backed by a team of teachers, parents, a paediatric occupational therapist, and a speech pathologist, we create hands-on craft and activity kits designed to make learning fun and engaging for children.”
With each box, Leanne’s team considers developmental needs and goals. Whether it’s honing fine motor skills, practising problem-solving, or encouraging imagination, My Creative Box is designed with both fun and growth in mind.
“Each product is carefully crafted to support key developmental milestones, from fine motor skills to problem-solving, while empowering parents, guardians, and caregivers with all the tools they need to foster creativity and learning at home or on the go,” Leanne says.
A business driven by family values
At the heart of My Creative Box is Leanne’s family – her husband, George, who serves as the CFO, and their three children, who have been actively involved in the business since day one. Leanne notes that “our kids have been part of the journey from the start, helping shape our products and even pitching in with warehouse work and decision-making.”
For the Papadopoulos family, My Creative Box is more than a business; it’s a collaborative family project that aligns with their values and priorities. This hands-on family involvement adds a special touch to their products and workplace culture. The company employs other parents and offers a flexible working environment that values family life.
“It’s rewarding to foster a culture that emphasises family, flexibility, and support for other parents,” says Leanne. “Ultimately, working in a family business allows us to create something meaningful together while making a positive impact on the lives of other families.”

Navigating the challenges of a family business
Of course, running a family business doesn’t come without its challenges.
“The biggest one is probably separating work from personal life,” Leanne admits. “It’s so important to set clear and realistic boundaries to make it work. Disagreements are totally normal, so it’s all about not taking things personally and having a good strategy for resolving conflicts when they come up.”
Despite the occasional tension, Leanne values the close working relationship with her family and the shared commitment to building a brand that resonates with their customers.
The flexibility of running a family business also means that Leanne can maintain a balance between her work and family life. “Being a mum to my three kids is my top priority,” she shares, “and I appreciate how running my own purpose-driven business gives me the flexibility to do that well—even though it took some time to find that balance.”
Creating moments that matter
For Leanne and her family, My Creative Box has been a way to make a difference in other families’ lives.
“We’ve worked so hard to help families create beautiful moments with their kids over the years,” Leanne says.
She loves hearing from customers who have enjoyed bonding with their children over My Creative Box activities, knowing they’ve played a part in fostering those memories. “It’s a privilege to support so many families on their creative journeys,” she says.
The business’s success has also allowed the family to travel as they work to scale My Creative Box as a global brand. Leanne says it gives the children a unique opportunity to see the world and be part of the brand’s growth. “We’ve been lucky enough to travel internationally as we expand the brand,” Leanne shares, “and it’s been a joy to include my family in this adventure. It really makes the journey even more meaningful!”

Australia’s Favourite Family Business
Being named a finalist in Australia’s Favourite Family Business competition has been a special moment for the family. “Winning Australia’s Favourite Family Business would mean the world to us,” Leanne says. “This recognition would really validate our efforts and inspire us to keep innovating and improving our products.”
She says the accolade would not only be an honour for her family but would reinforce the importance of the work they do in helping other families create, learn, and grow together.
As the business looks forward to expanding into Europe and the UK in 2025 with the support of Brave Toys, the Papadopoulos family is excited to bring My Creative Box to new families across the globe. Leanne reflects, “Parents across Australia love our products, and to be able to expand and reach more families internationally is a dream come true.”
For Leanne and her family, the journey of building My Creative Box has been a fulfilling adventure – one that’s grown from a simple frustration to a family-led mission with a global impact.
