Stop being a slave to work: Better balance equals success

In the competitive world of business, there’s a strongly held belief that the more time and effort we dedicate to our work, the better the results will be. As a result, many entrepreneurs find themselves caught in a cycle of long work hours, persistent stress and a sacrifice of personal time, all in the pursuit of success. But does it have to be that way? asks Vincent Nair, CEO of SMARTECH Business Systems.

Our society has ingrained in us the notion that early morning routines and working into the night are the only paths to achievement, leaving little room for a life outside of work. Unfortunately, this relentless approach often leads to burnout and high turnover rates among business owners.

But here’s the good news: business owners don’t have to play into these misguided and often dangerous stereotypes. I can personally vouch that it’s possible to strike the perfect balance between work and life.

By incorporating regular breaks, including engaging in some form of exercise – whether it’s a long walk, a team sport or a round of golf on Friday afternoons – I have discovered a unique formula that enhances my wellbeing and positively impacts my business performance.

3 top tips for better work-life balance

For business owners seeking a similar balance between personal satisfaction and business success, here are three essential aspects to consider. Contrary to popular belief, these factors can coexist and are vital for effective leadership and sustainable growth.

1. Teamwork makes the dream work

Firstly, a competent and well-trained team is crucial for any business aiming to achieve work-life balance. With the support of my team, I can delegate tasks and confidently trust that the business will continue to thrive in my absence.

This goes a step further than simply assigning tasks; it means empowering your team with essential responsibilities and demonstrating your confidence in their abilities. This boosts their morale and fosters a sense of ownership and accountability.

Delegation can be a powerful tool for nurturing future leaders within your organisation. By assigning challenging tasks and providing opportunities for growth, you can cultivate the talents and potential of your team members, creating a robust leadership pipeline.

2. Take a step away

Always remember that without breaks, you’re more likely to experience heightened stress levels and decision-making anxiety, which can ultimately harm your overall health. Stepping away from the workplace provides a valuable opportunity for leaders to gain a fresh perspective on their business. Personally, I achieve this through golf, but for you, it could be any activity that allows you to disconnect, such as practising yoga, painting, or spending time surrounded by nature.

Engage in activities that stimulate your mind, nourish your soul, and fuel your creativity. It could be reading books, pursuing hobbies, participating in community events, or engaging in volunteer work.

By investing in continuous learning and personal growth, you not only enrich your own life but also set a positive example for your team. Creating a culture of learning and growth within your organisation fosters a sense of purpose, engagement and overall wellbeing, leading to improved business performance.

Of course, ‘stepping back’ doesn’t mean disengaging entirely. Instead, recognise that taking mindful breaks from work is the only way to approach your business with a clear mind and a healthy perspective. These moments of respite enable you to objectively assess the bigger picture, identify improvement areas, and make informed decisions that contribute to the company’s growth.

During my walks on the golf course, I use the time to reflect on the decisions I made throughout the week. This introspection helps me fine-tune strategies, pinpoint areas for improvement, and enhance outcomes for better business results. It’s a critical moment for me to reassess and recalibrate my approach.

3. Guard your time

Finally, remember that time is a finite resource, and it’s crucial to defend it and utilise it wisely. To stay ahead of the game, I begin each week with meticulous planning and organisation. By staying on top of my schedule, I minimise the chances of work piling up and eliminate the need to sacrifice personal time to catch up.

Proactive planning enables me to strike a healthy balance between work and leisure. I actively carve out the time I need for myself rather than trying to squeeze it in at the last minute. Achieving a harmonious work-life balance is not a one-time achievement, but an ongoing journey.

By embracing continuous learning and personal growth, you’ll not only find fulfilment in both your personal and professional life but also create a sustainable business that thrives over the long term. And by prioritising a healthy work-life balance, delegating tasks and taking mindful breaks, it’s possible to achieve both personal wellbeing and business success.

It’s time to let go of the misconception that excessive work equals success and embrace a balanced approach that will allow you to thrive in all aspects of life.
