How business owners can say goodbye to overwhelm in just 5 minutes a day

brain-on-fire-overwhelm

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the day-to-day running of your business? You’re not alone. Psychologist Simi Rayat shares how you say bye-bye burnout and hello joy by dedicating just five minutes of your day to your mindset and mood.

Whoever said running your own business was easy?  Most small business owners are time-poor, juggling countless responsibilities. They’re pulled in all directions, growing the business, managing teams, making strategic decisions and overseeing finances, all while keeping an eye on a never-ending to-do list. It’s no wonder so many find themselves feeling stressed, overwhelmed and on the brink of burnout, especially when personal and family life are also in the mix.

How many times have you caught yourself saying, ‘I don’t have time for a break’ or ‘I’m constantly in survival mode’ while trying to stay afloat? I hear this from business owners all the time, especially as they work longer hours to tackle tasks that seem to multiply faster than they can check them off.

Protecting and taking control of your mental wellbeing is not just beneficial, it’s essential. I say this not only as a psychologist with 20 years of experience but as someone who’s lived it. Running multiple businesses, while raising young children and moving countries three times has shown me firsthand how easy it is to get caught up in the grind.

Who else would like to be a joy to be around and do business with?

About four and half years ago I found myself feeling burnt out, constantly stressed, and overwhelmed. I was reactive, frustrated, and even the smallest hiccup irritated me. Worse, my family bore the brunt of my frustration, and I was not a joy to be around. Before my workday even began, I was consumed by the sheer volume of tasks ahead, frantically switching between them, hoping I wouldn’t drop the ball.

Introducing the 5Qs Formula:

Determined to make a change, I researched how successful people manage their mornings to set the tone for their day. Many practised meditation, yoga, or simply savoured their morning coffee, but something crucial was missing. I realised what was needed was a simple, reliable, science-backed system that could prime the brain when it’s the most malleable – first thing in the morning. That’s when the idea for the 5Qs Formula was born.

Using my psychology expertise and lived experience as a business owner, I developed the 5Qs Formula, a proven system that will help you start your day and reduce overwhelm by asking yourself five key questions. These questions are designed to condition your mindset, enhance your mood, and help you focus on the behaviours that will make your day more productive and joyful.

The results? Over 100 of my clients have found the 5Qs Formula to be a game-changer. In just five minutes each morning, they feel more energised, intentional and connected to what matters. They’ve shifted from simply surviving to thriving. And the best part? You can do it too, whether while getting dressed, sipping your coffee, or commuting after school drop-off. So, can you spare five minutes to take control of your day?

I’m sure you must be eager to know what the five questions are.

The 5Qs Formula Questions:

  • Question 1: What is your emotional temperature, and what are you feeling today?
  • Question 2, parts A and B: What experiences, things or people in your life are you grateful for because they inspire you to be a better version of yourself? Think of a time you have received gratitude and appreciation from someone; how did it make you feel?
  • Question 3: What is working well for you right now, and what could be working better for you?
  • Question 4: What three things do you want to achieve today?
  • Question 5: How will you show up today?

When possible try to write down your responses to each question. This not only signals to your brain a stronger commitment to your intentions but also makes it easier to remember your intentions throughout the day, especially when things don’t go as planned. Keeping a journal of your responses can also provide valuable insights. At the end of the week, you can reflect on any patterns or recurring themes, helping you understand how you’ve been feeling, what’s been occupying your mind and how you’ve been spending your time. This reflective practice can be a powerful tool for your continuous growth and self-awareness.

Dedicating just five minutes of your time at the start of your day can help you say goodbye to stress, overwhelm and burnout. Instead, you’ll begin to feel more in control, calmer, intentional, connected, grounded and energised. Try the 5Q’s Formula and experience how it can help you focus on what truly matters, bringing more joy and fulfilment to your day!
