Flat to fired Up – uncovering the tools to recharge your body, mind and life
As a wellness specialist, I’ve spent years helping people reconnect to what truly energises them. My journey began not in a lab or corporate office, but through inviting people along on nature-based adventures.
It was one of those gorgeous Summer days, sitting by Cudgen Creek, Kingscliff, watching as people paddled and played on the crystal blue water flowing in on the high tide. I had watched this scene countless times before while hiring out paddle boards and kayaks at a company I had founded a few years earlier in 2009. I had just hired some equipment to a family on holidays and watched them walk over to one of my staff to get a lesson when suddenly, a thought popped into my brain… ‘Why is it when we actively engage in nature, do we seem to be healthier and happier?’.
It just sat there ruminating, one thought that would eventually change my life. For years, I had been taking people on wonderful adventures exploring nature-based playgrounds and had always seen the same evidence as I was witnessing now, a definitive change in people’s attitudes and behaviours before and after engaging in nature-based activities.
Discovering the seven tools of wellbeing
Over the following years, I worked with academics, practitioners, and countless everyday people, blending science with real-world observation. What I discovered was simple yet profound: seven core tools that, when combined, create a powerful effect on your wellbeing. These tools are movement, environment, earthing, time, connection, breath, and reflection and form the foundation of the GreenX7 framework. They are not abstract concepts but practices, tested and refined, that can transform how you feel, think, and live.
Each one serves a unique purpose, but together they create something far greater than the sum of their parts. This is a whole-systems approach to wellbeing that is simple, sustainable, and accessible to everyone.
Why do we need a new rhythm?
Today, our lives are more disconnected than ever, rates of loneliness, burnout, and chronic illness are rising. We spend 46 hours a week staring at screens and 90 per cent of our day indoors. The things that once kept us healthy and happy – nature, movement, connection – are slipping away.
This is where rhythm matters. Not the frantic rhythm of rushing from task to task, but a life rhythm that moves with you, supports you, and brings you back to what truly matters. A rhythm that recharges you rather than drains you.
Creating your daily multi-habit
You don’t need complicated routines or expensive programs to reclaim your energy. What you need is one simple, non-negotiable habit, a multi-habit that combines the seven tools into a single daily practice.
Here’s how:
- Take 30 minutes each day, and protect it like your most important meeting.
- Move your body outdoors.
- Connect with someone you like—have a real conversation, share a laugh.
- Switch off from technology, completely.
- Be fully present, reflect, breathe deeply, and let nature do its work.
- Finish by grounding yourself—shoes off, feet on the earth, and just be.
When you do this, you’re not just going through the motions; you’re recharging your battery, physically, mentally, and emotionally, so you can thrive instead of just survive.
Why it works
Movement fuels your mind and body. Environment and earthing reconnect you with nature. Time and reflection give your mind space to reset. Breathing calms your nervous system. Connection builds belonging. Each tool contributes, but it’s their synergy that makes the magic happen. This is not theory—it’s been tested by thousands of people through our programs and refined by years of research and lived experience. The results speak for themselves: more energy, better mood, stronger resilience, and a deeper sense of being alive.
You don’t need to wait for the perfect conditions to begin; start where you are, with what you have. Trade 30 minutes of scrolling for 30 minutes of living. Choose an activity that blends these tools and fits your life. The more consistently you do it, the more powerful the results become. Energy rises, stress fades and life feels like it’s yours again. Your wellbeing is not a luxury, it’s your foundation. When you reclaim your rhythm, you reclaim yourself. And when you do, you’ll find that the life you’re creating is not just better, it becomes worthy of you.
