5 ways entrepreneurs can avoid burnout
As an entrepreneur and business owner, I understand the risks of working too much and being prone to the risk of burnout. One of the biggest traps of being an entrepreneur is that we love what we do with so much passion that we sometimes forget to take a break, and other areas of our life are compromised, writes mindfulness and performance coach, Melo Calarco.
Entrepreneurs are particularly prone to burnout because running a business requires us to wear many hats and juggle multiple responsibilities, often with limited resources, especially in the startup phase. This can lead to high levels of stress, which can take a toll on your physical and mental health over time and eventually lead to burnout.
Another common trap for entrepreneurs is working excessively long hours, including evenings and weekends, to keep your businesses running. This can lead to exhaustion and make it difficult to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
The real risks of burnout
One of my clients, running six different businesses across multiple time zones, used to work extremely long hours. He worked in various offices globally, on the airplane, at airport lounges, and anywhere he could take his laptop out. His body eventually said ‘that’s enough’ and he experienced a full mental and physical burnout. His body stopped producing hormones (like testosterone), his blood pressure was through the roof, his nervous system was shot, and he was in such bad shape that he ended up in intensive care for weeks. This was the worst case of burnout I have ever seen, and it took us about six months to get him functional again and 12 months to fully recover.
Additionally, starting and running a business involves a significant amount of uncertainty and risk, which can be mentally and emotionally draining. Entrepreneurs may often worry about finances, sales, competition, and other factors that are outside of their control. They also feel a great deal of pressure to succeed, both for themselves and for their stakeholders. This can lead to feelings of self-doubt, anxiety, and burnout.
Overall, the combination of high stress, long work hours, uncertainty, risk, pressure to succeed, and lack of support can make entrepreneurs more prone to burnout. It is essential for entrepreneurs to take some proactive steps to prioritise their wellbeing and manage their stress levels to perform at their best and prevent burning out.
Here are five tips for entrepreneurs to avoid burnout
1. Prioritise self-care
I know this might seem like common sense, but what I do know from coaching many entrepreneurs, is that common sense isn’t always ‘common practice’.
One of the best ways to avoid burnout is by prioritising your self-care every day. When you take care of yourself, you’ll be better equipped to handle the challenges that come with running a business.
The main areas to focus on are:
- Exercising regularly
- Healthy eating
- Adequate sleep
- Regular renewal breaks
- Hobbies and interests
- Meditation or down time
Ask yourself, what area of self-care can you make some improvements to, and what can you start doing today?
2. Learn to eliminate, delegate or automate
As an entrepreneur, it can be tempting to try to do everything yourself. It’s easy to wear too many hats and find yourself working long hours doing absolutely everything in your business. Consider outsourcing tasks that are time-consuming but not directly related to your core business.
I often teach my clients to look at three things when it comes to their everyday tasks and what can they do to either eliminate, delegate, or automate.
What can you:
- Eliminate: Is there anything in your daily workflow that you could totally eliminate, like excessive meetings, time-wasting tasks, some admin?
- Delegate: What repetitive tasks do you perform daily that does not require your specific skill set, and what can you outsource or delegate to others?
- Automate: If there are repetitive tasks that you do very frequently throughout the week, perhaps there is a way to systemise this and automate it. There may be some great software that can do some of these tasks.

3. Set realistic goals
Setting realistic goals is crucial for avoiding burnout. If you set goals that are too ambitious or unrealistic (as many entrepreneurs do), you’re likely to become overwhelmed and stressed out.
Instead, set achievable goals that you can realistically accomplish within a given timeframe and celebrate the milestones along the way.
4. Take regular renewal breaks
As an entrepreneur, it can be difficult to take time off, but it’s essential for your health and avoiding burnout.
Take regular, small breaks throughout the day, and make sure to take at least one day or half-day off per week. Use this time to recharge your batteries, spend time with family and friends, or pursue hobbies and interests outside of work.
5. Build a support system
Entrepreneurs may not have the same level of support as employees in traditional work environments, and they may feel isolated and struggle to find people who understand the challenges they face. Building a strong support system can help you avoid burnout.
Surround yourself with people who understand and support your entrepreneurial journey. Consider joining a networking group, finding a mentor, or hiring a coach to help you navigate the ups and downs of running a business.
The entrepreneurial journey can be a rollercoaster, so understanding the common traps and practicing these five tips above will help you enjoy the journey and perform at your best, without the risk of burning out.
