Generative AI has the potential to play an increasing role in helping level the playing field for micro business owners who need help creating a presence online. Suzanne Mitchell, Australian Market Lead, GoDaddy, explains five simple ways to harness its power.

Solopreneurs or microbusiness owners may feel like they lack the time and resources required to take a business from idea to online. However, prospective entrepreneurs who understand how to maximise the capabilities of online tools and the uses of generative AI have the potential to take the leap to business owner and get online in minutes.

A survey conducted in 2024 of 2,256 Australian online microbusiness owners by Venture Forward, GoDaddy’s research initiative, found that two thirds (66 per cent) of those surveyed said they have experienced a positive impact from AI on their business.

Five ways AI technology could help to benefit Australian microbusinesses:

Domain names

While circumstance necessitated an unnegotiable shift to online shopping in 2020, due to the global pandemic, many consumers have continued to favour it in the post-pandemic world. Having a domain name can help protect your business’ identity online, could help you look professional, and can provide a memorable access point to help consumers discover your business online.

However, the process of searching for domain names can present an issue for those who feel they are less tech-savvy entrepreneurs. Buying a domain name is often considered a key first step to take a business from idea to online, and doing so with GoDaddy unlocks Airo, an intuitive AI-powered solution which assists with domain name generation and searches

Content creation

Many consumers are fully accustomed to businesses of all sizes delivering information and promoting products with professional-level, dynamic multimedia content, which may create a challenge for those who may feel they do not have a background in design or social media marketing.

However, generative AI can provide significant support in this area by helping to create text- and image-based content in just a few clicks. Venture Forward, in the same 2024 survey mentioned above, also found Australian online microbusiness owners who reported using AI in their business were more likely to be generating on average over $120,000 in revenue each year: 30% compared to 25% of non-AI users. It is aways important to review your AI generated content for accuracy and descriptions about your business.

SEO visibility

Search engine visibility can be of great value to microbusinesses trying to differentiate from the crowd. Major search engines will often assess content on a website for authority, quality and relevance, then take these factors into consideration when serving search results.

Using generative AI to create blog content, identify keywords and manage search engine optimisation (SEO), can help microbusiness owners work towards putting their websites in the best possible position to rank highly in search results, drive traffic and generate leads when a prospective customer searches for a topic.

Email marketing

Email marketing can be an effective tool for a brand to improve its reputation among current, past and prospective customers and has the potential to be used to help drive increased customer engagement through its personalization and optionality.

However, crafting an email marketing campaign from scratch – including how to identify target audiences, draft key messaging and write a compelling email can be considered as a specialised task. With GoDaddy Airo, entrepreneurs can use AI-fuelled email templates to help start engaging with customers after purchasing a domain.

Newsletter writing

By writing a customer newsletter, a business can display its multi-layered knowledge and understanding of its industry or niche. This slightly differs to an email marketing campaign, which might take a more promotional route.

The impact of a successful newsletter has the potential to nudge a customer in the right direction – to incentivise them to purchase a business’ product or service after learning more about why the business should be trusted in its field.

The use of AI tools could help entrepreneurs and micro businesses level the playing field with larger competitors by giving them opportunities to help run their businesses more efficiently, stay connected with customers and power their businesses.
