4 ways automating invoicing processes can benefit your business

Australian small business owners have told us they are working one extra day per week, on average, to meet the overwhelming amount of admin, writes Elise Balsillie, Head of Thryv Australia.

Admin-related tasks such as invoicing can often fall to the wayside when time pressures are faced. But there is good news and a way to make this admin-heavy (but necessary) aspect of running a business faster, cheaper and more effective.

The adoption of automation technology can streamline paperwork, support business growth and help small businesses get paid faster and on time.

Here are four reasons why you should focus on automating your invoicing:

1. Fewer human errors

Automation can reduce errors made when data is entered manually. Even though a customer might eventually forgive you for accidentally adding an extra zero to their invoice, those mistakes also can just as easily mean losing a repeat customer or any referrals.

It can also ensure that processes remain consistent. For example, the level of detail that one person includes on an invoice may differ to the next. This can create issues, particularly when it comes to expectations of customers (such as when to pay).

2. Less time spent following up

Automation can help to address the threat of not being able to deliver on financial obligations such as wages and rent by making it easier for customers to transfer funds, while making the process quicker.

3. Greater opportunities to engage

Every invoice should be thought of as an opportunity for customer interaction. Take the opportunity to connect with customers by putting the empty real estate at the bottom of your invoice to good use.

Consider including one of the following:

  • A discount code to encourage repeat business
  • Details on how customers can leave a review
  • A short, personalised thank you note

4. Faster and easier financial reports

Having digital invoices in one place makes it faster, easier and a little less nerve-wracking to pull reports, particularly if needed for a spot-check-style audit.

All-in-all, the automation of invoices can help to save your business money (and ultimately contribute to its growth and success). You can’t afford to delay its implementation if you haven’t already done so!
