The art of goal setting: 8 tips to make your dreams a reality
Setting goals is a crucial step toward business success – but unless you put steps in place to take action on each goal, merely knowing setting goals won’t put you on the path to achieving them.
Petina Tieman, founder of Australian Women in Business and a globally recognised business coach, emphasises that while the act of putting goals on paper is powerful, it’s just the beginning. Without actionable plans, goals risk becoming “lovely, inspiring words on paper” that never see the light of day.
“If achieving goals was as simple as jotting them down, we’d all be effortlessly living our dreams,” Petina explains. True success requires a strategic approach that goes beyond what you want and focuses deeply on the ‘how’. Many people set goals built on the SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound), however, to truly understand what you need and how to achieve your goals, it takes more than the SMART criteria to get you there.
As part of her mentoring services, Petina offers an Hour of Power session that digs into the realities of everything you should consider when goal setting. Here are her top tips:
1. Move beyond to-do lists and into actionable steps
Goals aren’t simply to-do lists. “Goals need structure,” Petina says. “Otherwise, they’re just another list.” Break down goals into actionable steps, set milestones, and assign deadlines to maintain momentum. “When you have these steps mapped out, it’s easier to focus and stay motivated,” she adds, stressing that without this structure, goals often fade into obscurity.
2. Be mindful about goal placement and visualisation
It’s important to be conscious of where you write down and store your goals. “If you save them in a document on your computer, they disappear the minute you close the screen,” Petina explains. “Similarly, if you jot them down in a notebook and then tuck it away in a cupboard, they’re hidden and soon forgotten.”
Instead, she recommends showcasing goals on a vision board placed in a prominent location, where you can see them daily. “Seeing your goals on a vision board daily helps you visualise and manifest them into your life as every day you’re faced with a reminder of what you need to do to stay on track to achieve your hopes, dreams, goals and aspirations.”

3. Passion vs. obligation in goal-setting
Petina encourages entrepreneurs to reflect on their goals and question their underlying motivation: “Are you passionate about your goals, or are they just things you think you ‘should’ achieve because they feel safe or obligatory? Without genuine conviction, goals risk becoming chores that simply add to your to-do list. Passion drives action, and if you’re excited about your goals, you’re far more likely to achieve them.”
4. Be real about resource planning and budgeting
Strategic goal-setting considers the resources and budget necessary for achievement. “Planning includes everything from financial budgeting to human resources,” Petina says. Assess what tools, staffing, and financial resources you’ll need to bring your goals to life. This foresight lays a solid foundation to manage progress, expectations and realistic timelines.
5. Prioritise and delegate wisely
Success often hinges on prioritising tasks based on urgency and importance. Tools like the Eisenhower Matrix to help focus on high-impact tasks, adding that delegation is crucial to avoid overwhelm or burnout. “Identify tasks that could be outsourced, especially if they’re outside your core skills, are tasks you don’t like doing, or if they take time away from strategic activities,” Petina advises.
6. Know your market and price with confidence
Knowing your target audience helps you shape offerings that truly serve clients. “Being specific about your audience allows you to tailor your services and marketing efforts to attract the right clients.”
Understanding pricing is essential too. “Many entrepreneurs undervalue their services,” she says. “Understanding your worth lets you confidently price your offerings to reflect the value you deliver.”
7. Integrate your marketing strategy into goal-setting
Marketing is vital to business growth, yet often overlooked in goal-setting. “Without a marketing strategy, even the best ideas remain hidden,” Petina explains. Both digital and traditional marketing strategies should be part of your plan, ensuring that your business gains visibility and builds trust.
8. Time management is key
Efficient time management is essential for achieving goals. “Tools like time-blocking, to-do lists, and project management software can help you organise and prioritise tasks.” But it’s not just about filling your calendar – it’s about dedicating enough time to all facets of your business that need your attention.
Goal-setting is only the first step. To realise your goals, you need a structured, strategic approach that includes conscious goal placement, resource allocation, prioritisation, effective time management, and a strong marketing plan.
By digging deeper into these elements, businesses can turn their goals from mere words on paper into actionable plans for success.
