The NSW government is calling for small businesses to have their say on a planned successor to the Business Connect advisory service.

The proposed new service will assist small business owners to develop the skills they need to run and grow their businesses by providing specialist advice. Business owners are being invited to help design the new program as part of a 90-day review into the needs of small business owners.

Key points

  • NSW begins 90-day review to replace Business Connect
  • Mark Bouris to lead consultation with Service NSW Business Bureau
  • Recommendations due May 2026, with small businesses invited to have their say

The review will be led by serial entrepreneur Mark Bouris.

“I speak with business owners every day and am acutely aware of the challenges and pressures small business owners face, and the difference expert advice and support can make,” Bouris commented.

“I’m really looking forward to helping shape the future of the new small business advisory service and am confident this can be a game-changer for the business community in NSW.”

The review will examine the core foundational and specialist skills needed by small business owners, the common challenges small businesses face and key industries requiring additional support.

The review findings will be presented to the NSW Government in May 2026.

Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said the government is committed to investing and supporting the nation’s small businesses.

“I am delighted Mark has accepted our invitation to lead this review, and I can think of no one better to help inform a new small business advisory service.”

Have your say

To ensure the service reflects the needs of small businesses across different industries, business stages and locations, the government is calling for small business owners to have their say on the key supports the new advisory service should include.

Stakeholders, including peak bodies, business chambers and local councils, are also encouraged to contribute to the consultation.

The government is seeking feedback on the following:

  • What support will make the biggest difference to small businesses
  • What core skills or advice do small businesses need at different stages
  • How small business owners prefer to access support

Minister for Small Business Janelle Saffin described the nation’s small businesses as the backbone of the economy, driving innovation and creating jobs.

“… Which is why we are committed to providing support that actually works for them,” Saffin said.

“We know how much the small business community valued Business Connect. This review is about taking that foundation and building something that is even better for modern businesses.

“I encourage every small business owner to have their say and help us shape a service that works for them.”

This consultation is open until 11:59pm, Sunday 19 April 2026. You can complete the survey or make a submission here.
