Shop Talk: OpenAI’s plans to turn ChatGPT into a checkout

OpenAI is gearing up to make shopping on ChatGPT as seamless as a scroll through Insta, with plans to integrate a checkout experience directly from chat.

According to reports from the Financial Times and Reuters, the AI giant is building a new shopping and checkout system directly into ChatGPT, meaning users can discover, browse, and now buy without ever leaving the chat.

What started as a chatbot answering questions might soon be handling entire online purchases. It’s all part of OpenAI’s broader push to expand beyond subscriptions and tap into eCommerce revenue.

From conversations to conversions

Right now, ChatGPT can suggest products and link you to retailers’ sites to finish your shop. However, this new feature, currently in development, would keep the entire transaction in the chat. Think AI-powered shopping assistant meets one-click checkout.

OpenAI plans to take a cut of the sales made through this system, effectively turning ChatGPT into a new kind of affiliate marketplace.

This could open big doors for brands, especially small businesses trying to be seen in a crowded digital world. And if you’re running a store on Shopify, you’re already one step closer – they’ve been working behind the scenes with OpenAI on this project.

Shopify in the Mix

While OpenAI declined to comment and Shopify’s staying quiet too, multiple sources told the Financial Times that early versions of the shopping system have already been demoed to brands, with financial terms under discussion.

It’s a strong signal that Shopify merchants may be among the first to take advantage of this new channel. It’s a smart move, considering the platform powers hundreds of thousands of Aussie online shops.

Why it matters for your business

If you’re a small retailer looking for ways to stand out without blowing your ad budget, this change to ChatGPT could be huge. ChatGPT’s AI already helps users find products that match their needs. Now imagine your product popping up, with an instant-buy option, right in that moment of decision. No clicking away. No getting lost in competitor tabs. Just instant conversion.

Plus, this isn’t just about big brands. OpenAI’s model relies on high traffic and broad usage, which means there’s an incentive to surface relevant products from all corners of the web, especially niche and unique ones.

How to get ready

While the features are still in testing, now’s a good time to prepare. Keep an eye on OpenAI’s updates. This tool could roll out quickly once it’s ready, so it’s important to keep up to date.

Give your business the best chance at discovery. Spruce up your product descriptions and images. ChatGPT favours clean, clear information, so ensure your descriptions are accurate and that product images include alt text and descriptions.

If you’re on Shopify, stay tuned for integration opportunities. Businesses on Shopify will likely get early access to the feature.

Think about adopting conversational listings. Users might be asking, “What’s a great eco-friendly gift for under $50?” and you want your product to be the answer.

Is this the future of AI + retail?

The short answer is likely to be yes. This isn’t just a tech upgrade. It’s a glimpse at how AI might reshape online shopping. If customers start trusting chatbots for product advice (and now purchases), we could see a shift from traditional search engines to chat-based discovery. That means small businesses have a fresh chance to get ahead of the curve and show up in the AI-driven buying journey. In fact, ChatGPT’s checkout could make “add to cart” as easy as asking a question.
