Worried that AI is coming to nick your job? Relax… A landmark study from Jobs and Skills Australia has found that Generative Artificial Intelligence is more likely to help Australians work smarter, not replace them.

The Generative AI Capacity Study comes at a crucial time, as more business owners and staff start experimenting with AI tools to simplify their workloads. However, early adoption of AI has been inconsistent, depending on the industry, role, and even location. Yet AI is already having a tangible impact on business. Despite Aussies’ continuing concerns regarding AI replacing humans, the main message of the study is that AI is here to augment, not annihilate, our work.

Gen AI opportunities and challenges for Aussie workers

Professor Barney Glover, Commissioner of Jobs and Skills Australia, says AI opens up tremendous opportunities for Australians.

“Generative AI can boost productivity and create new ways of working,” he explains. “At the same time, some tasks – particularly in admin and clerical roles – may be automated.”

Glover suggests some jobs might shift, but the study emphasises that human skills still reign supreme. Creativity, problem-solving, and adaptability will be more important than ever. The main takeaway of the report is that if you can learn, adapt, and embrace new tools, AI can be your new workmate rather than your competition.

AI making life easier for small business owners

For small business owners, the rise of AI is actually a positive story. The study suggests that rather than replacing people, AI can take over repetitive tasks like admin, data entry, and scheduling, freeing up business owners’ time to focus on the work that really matters.

AI can do more than the grunt work, too. Glover suggests you can use AI like a second set of eyes. Feed it your data and it can help you with decision-making. Use it to crunch numbers, spot trends, and provide insights that would normally take hours to pull together.

So, getting your staff to adopt AI now can help set your business up for future success.

Glover also points out that entry-level roles remain essential. He stresses that these positions give people the foundational experience they need to grow their careers, and it’s important the labour market continues to support them even as AI changes the way work gets done.

Preparing for the AI-powered future

The study includes ten recommendations for how Australia can transition successfully into an AI-enabled economy. Upskilling, training, and building digital confidence are front and centre. Essentially, making sure no one gets left behind while the robots (or rather, the algorithms) are taking off.

The study suggests Generative AI isn’t something to fear. It’s a tool to help Aussies work smarter, boost productivity, and create new ways of doing business. If you’re open to learning and adapting, it’s less ‘Terminator’ and more ‘team member who doesn’t need coffee breaks’.
