Four Sydney hotspots earn ‘Purple Flag’ status
Four Sydney precincts have officially earned a global tick of approval for their nightlife, dining and after-dark experiences, with Chinatown in Haymarket, Burwood CBD, Canley Heights and Canley Vale all receiving Purple Flag accreditation.
The Purple Flag is an international program that recognises areas that are safe, vibrant and well-managed at night, giving locals and visitors confidence that a precinct offers a good mix of dining, entertainment, culture and transport options after dark.
The accreditation is designed to boost foot traffic by strengthening a precinct’s reputation and encouraging people to stay out longer and spend more.
Purple Flag precincts are independently assessed on factors including safety, public transport access, street lighting, diversity of venues and inclusivity.
NSW is currently the only Australian state running the Purple Flag program, joining more than 100 accredited districts worldwide across the UK, Sweden and New Zealand.
Key points
- International accreditation recognising safe and vibrant night-time precincts
- Assesses transport, safety, diversity, lighting and entertainment options
- Designed to help attract visitors, support local business and grow the night-time economy
Why these areas made the cut
Haymarket’s Chinatown was recognised for its mix of restaurants, markets, shopping and live entertainment centred around Dixon Street, Paddy’s Markets and Darling Square.
Burwood’s booming food scene and strong public transport links also helped secure accreditation, with the area recently named Australia’s coolest neighbourhood by Time Out.
Meanwhile, Canley Heights and Canley Vale were recognised for the way local businesses, council and government programs have worked together to grow the Western Sydney night-time economy.
These two precincts are already part of Fairfield Council’s Special Entertainment Precinct trial and have received Uptown Grant funding aimed at supporting local business collectives.
A boost for hospitality and retail businesses
The accreditation comes as councils and business groups push harder to encourage people back into local precincts after dark. 24-Hour Economy Commissioner Michael Rodrigues said the process requires “hard work and coordination across businesses, council and State government agencies”.
“The data shows that Sydneysiders want choice and proximity to good going out environments,” Rodrigues said.
A recognised night-time precinct can help attract diners, visitors and eventgoers who might otherwise head into the CBD or stay home scrolling Uber Eats and watching Netflix on the couch.
Business Sydney Executive Director Paul Nicolaou said Purple Flag status signals that visitors can expect “a great night out with plenty of options to get home safe and sound too”.
Local businesses the real winners
Haymarket Alliance President Brad Chan said the accreditation reflects the effort businesses have already been putting into the precinct.
“Haymarket has always been alive at night — it’s when families, friends and visitors come together to eat, explore and stay out late,” Chan said.
“Being recognised through Purple Flag reflects how much effort local businesses put into creating a safe, welcoming and exciting place after dark.”
