Your guide to star-quality social media videos

unboxing-video

Who doesn’t love a good story in motion—a snippet of behind the scenes of Toni & Ryan’s podcast or the good, bad and downright ugly that comes with unboxing of a Shein haul? Video is the king of content and the stats don’t lie. A staggering 54 per cent of marketers are now focusing heavily on video content, and it’s clear why, says social media expert Emily-Rose Hills.

An impressive 93 per cent of businesses are acquiring new customers through video content. This is no small feat on saturated social platforms where capturing audience attention is increasingly challenging. I can already hear you inventing excuses as to why you don’t use video:
1. It’s expensive
2. It’s time consuming
3. You don’t want to appear on camera

But here’s how you can roll out star-quality social media videos without all the hassle and expense.

Have a weekly creative pow-wow

You don’t have to pay thousands of dollars to a creative concept company. Start with a brainstorming session with your entire team.Think of it as a free-thinking huddle where no suggestion is too crazy. Even what might seem like the silliest ideas could trigger an avalanche of imaginative concepts you may have never thought of alone.  From business pitches in mime to product demos in stop motion, let the creative juices flow. After every idea is documented, work through the concepts one by one and include how and who are carrying it out. You could even list the props and number of people required. Is it possible to have a team member leaping 7 cars while eating a burrito? Probably not, but street interviews, tutorials and even bloopers can make for compelling viewing without needing a stunt double.

Your content creation mantra = Consistency

Make content creation a part of your weekly ritual, like your sacred morning coffee or that Friday night pizza indulgence. Whether it’s a corner of your office or a sunny spot in the park, find your stage and keep the camera rolling. Regular posts mean you’re not just a one-hit wonder but a consistent chart-topper in your audience’s newsfeed. You don’t need a full production crew or make-up assistants. Being real and speaking your truth while walking to work is just as likely to perform as well as videos made by an entire crew of professionals. Two things to remember, mark it in your diary as a priority and don’t compromise on audio.

Hire a videographer, channel your inner editor

To save on costs, think about just hiring a videographer for shooting your videos—particularly ad campaign material— and then do the editing part yourself. (Keep reading, we’ll get to that part). This approach gets you professional-quality footage while keeping your budget in check. It’s a practical way to blend professional skills with your own creative touch in the editing process editing yourself. You get a professional foundation with your unique branding and be able to repurpose the videos for TikTok, YouTube or website banners.

Editing: Less like rocket science, more like fun

Editing might sound as complex as assembling IKEA furniture, but apps like CapCut are the Allen keys of video editing – simple, effective and with a couple of YouTube tutorials you’ll be cutting and splicing like George Lucas.

CapCut’s free version is a hit because it’s super easy to use, even if you’re new to video editing. It’s packed with cool features like music, cutting, and trimming tools. Bonus points, you can download videos without any pesky watermarks. The app keeps updating with new stuff to keep things fresh, and it’s got loads of effects and filters to play with. Basically, it’s a great free tool for sprucing up your videos without a lot of fuss

Save your B-Roll collection

B-roll footage is those candid moments, the behind-the-scenes. Start collecting these gems. It could be your team in action, your dog interrupting a Zoom call, or the mysterious disappearance of pens from your desk. This footage adds flavour and personality to your videos and people related to other people.

Set a challenge. Become a B-Roll boss

Here’s a fun weekly mission for you: Become a B-Roll Boss. Start sneaking in some shots of daily office life, your morning routine, or even your commute. Turn them into montages using CapCut. Add trending music while you’re uploading to TikTok or Reels and watch the views clock up. More views tells the algorithm people are watching your content, therefore the more people you reach.

With these tips and a sense of humour, you’re all set to take the short-form video content world by storm. Keep it light, keep it fun, and remember, every phone is a potential blockbuster camera. Lights, Camera, Action!
