Social media is an essential tool for any business looking to connect with their audience, drive engagement, and generate sales. However what do you do when your efforts don’t seem to be paying off? Rita Agoulian, Founder and CEO of LickYourPhone Media has some answers.

If you’re questioning whether or not your social media strategy is working, here are five clear signs that it’s time to reassess your approach.

5 warning signs your social is underperforming

1. Your competitors are outperforming you

If your competitors’ social media presence is thriving while yours isn’t, the problem isn’t the market, it’s your strategy. Your industry peers are working with the same tools, platforms, and audience demographics that you are, so if they’re experiencing success and you’re not, it’s time to assess what they’re doing differently.

Start by looking at their content. Are they posting short-form videos while you’re still stuck on static posts? Are they collaborating with influencers or engaging more with their audience? Look at what they are doing differently to you and determine how you can adapt these strategies to your brand without copying their approach outright. Social media success isn’t about reinventing the wheel, but rather getting it just right to suit your business’ unique voice and objectives.

2. Your follower growth is declining or stagnant

While follower count isn’t the most important metric, a consistent decline or stagnant growth should be a red flag. If people aren’t following you (or worse, are unfollowing), you need to look into and understand why.

One major reason could be inconsistent branding and messaging. If your content lacks a consistent tone, visual identity, or storytelling, it may confuse your audience. People follow businesses that provide ongoing value, whether that’s through education, entertainment, or inspiration. If your content doesn’t align with what attracted them in the first place, they won’t stick around.

To fix this, focus on storytelling and personal branding. Show the people behind the business, share behind-the-scenes content, and create a reason for your followers to connect with your business. A strong, consistent brand presence makes it easier for people to relate to your content and remain engaged.

3. Engagement rates are dropping

If your posts are getting fewer likes, comments, shares, or saves, it’s a clear indicator that your content isn’t resonating. Low reach and impressions probably means that your content isn’t even being seen beyond your immediate followers, which could be due to not optimising for visibility or shareability.

Another warning sign is if your engagement primarily comes from bots or people outside your target audience. Buying followers or using engagement pods might temporarily inflate your numbers, but it won’t translate into genuine brand loyalty or conversions. It’s also really obvious, which can damage trust and credibility amongst your followers.

Look at your analytics to see what types of content perform best for you, then rinse and repeat. Are your video views plummeting? Try different storytelling techniques, use trending audio, engaging captions, and compelling hooks in the first few seconds to encourage people to stop scrolling.

Remember that engagement is a two-way street, so make sure you’re responding to comments, asking questions, and encouraging discussions.

4. You’re receiving negative comments or no feedback at all

One of the most commonly overlooked measures of social media performance is audience sentiment. If your posts receive little to no feedback, it means your audience isn’t interested or doesn’t see the value in what you’re sharing. Even worse, if you’re receiving negative comments, it could indicate that your messaging is missing the mark or your content is boring.

If you post the same type of content over and over for too long, your audience will eventually tune out. Social media thrives on fresh, engaging content, so don’t be afraid to change it up and experiment with different formats, storytelling styles, and interactive elements like polls or Q&As. Having a content calendar can give you a big picture plan and also prevent you from posting randomly, so your audience knows what to expect from you and stays engaged.

5. You’re spending time and money without a return on investment

Social media should be driving measurable results, whether that’s brand awareness, website traffic, lead generation, or sales. If you’re investing a lot of time and money into ad spend, content creation, and influencer partnerships without seeing any real return on investment, something isn’t working.

A failing strategy might be an indication your targeting is off, your messaging isn’t resonating, or your call-to-action isn’t strong enough. Take a step back and look at whether your content aligns with your business goals. Are your ads reaching the right people? Is your organic content building credibility and trust? Are you making it easy for followers to take the next step, whether that’s subscribing to your newsletter, visiting your website, or making a purchase?

If any of these signs sound familiar, it’s time to reassess your social media strategy. A successful approach requires consistency, flexibility, and a deep understanding of what resonates with your community. Social media isn’t just about posting, it’s about creating meaningful connections, telling compelling stories, and providing real value to your followers. The good news is that the social media landscape is ever-evolving, so there’s always potential to improve. By identifying the mistakes in your existing strategy and making small adjustments, you can quickly turn things around and start seeing the results.
