Why entrepreneurs need to empower through delegation

I have always been fascinated with the dynamics of success. I’ve studied and adopted zones of different philosophies, and they have all served me well. One of the most defining principles I have lived by is, “Why do anything yourself when someone else can do it better?’ This mindset encouraged me to delegate effectively and leverage the talents of others.

My father could never understand why I would bring in a specialist lawyer, such as a barrister, to provide an expert opinion, when technically, we could have handled a matter ourselves. Buy, why spend an entire day on something when an expert can do it in an hour and do it better? Yes, it costs more upfront, but outsourcing to a barrister was far more effective and efficient. Clients recognised this value and were willing to pay for a thoroughly researched and authoritative opinion. Over time, I realised that this ‘do less to achieve more’ philosophy not only helped me make more money but also allowed me to focus on the business rather than getting stuck working in the business. Once I had won the trust of a client, they backed my judgment and advice in other matters, so it became a self-fulfilling prophecy that delegating was the best course of action for everyone.

It’s about the mindset

Ironically, it was my father who taught me how to train people to take responsibility and be creative in how they went about solving problems, so I give him credit for instilling this mindset in me and for giving me the freedom to delegate to others throughout my working life.

This philosophy has profoundly influenced my approach to business. Success isn’t measured by the hours you work but by the value you deliver. I’d rather dedicate one hour to making a critical strategic decision than spend 40 hours on tasks that others can handle more effectively. By focusing my energy on what truly matters, I’ve been able to maximise both my impact and efficiency. Once I removed myself from the day-to-day operations, the business truly took off.

The companion idea to this principle that I firmly adhere to is, ‘It’s not what you know, but who you know’, or said differently, ‘not how, but who’. Asking ‘How do I do something that I don’t know how to do?’ is a circular argument that leads nowhere. Asking ‘Who can I speak to or turn to?’ is far more empowering. As such, building strong networks and staying connected have been indispensable to my journey.

Question everything

As you’re sure to have realised by now, I’ve always considered myself a simple, ordinary guy, so why would I assume I have all the answers? My journey has been shaped by learning from others: my early experiences with Tom Curry and New Pask taught me about how to be a smart real estate investor. JCI instilled the value of a well-balanced life, and countless personal development courses deepened my understanding of sales, motivation and leadership. My many friends and acquaintances have been positive and enthusiastic people who inspired me to think big and dream bigger. Lifelong friends like Denis Brosnan and Eric Oxenford taught me the value of networks and keeping connected with people. I have made a habit of learning from everybody, but among all these lessons, the power of delegation stands out as one of the most important principles for achieving success.

The takeaway

Success isn’t about doing everything yourself; it’s about knowing who can do it better. Delegation isn’t laziness; it’s leverage. Empower others, trust their talents and focus your energy where it matters most. Build a strong network, let go of control and create space for creativity, strategy and rest. That’s how you multiply your impact, scale your vision and unlock a life of freedom and flow.
