How this founder is fixing the broken family law system
Divorce, separation, adoption and other big milestone moments such as moving in with a new partner, or even buying a pet together, don’t come with a set guidebook.
People are often confused about the legal and professional support they might need, and are left to fend for themselves, resulting in wasted time and money, unnecessary stress, and missed opportunities to get the help they might need.
For Adam Levine, founder of Australian Family Legal Advisory Services (AFLAS), the broken family law system was crying out for a third-party platform that would guide people through the process, and connect them with quality-checked service providers:
“These experiences are already extremely stressful, and in my family law practice, I kept seeing people who were struggling to understand what was required of them and looking for advice.”
So he decided to create a platform designed as a concierge service. To better support people at milestone life moments, and to connect service providers with clients who needed their support.
It also provides a mix of self-help solutions via a range of paid and free downloads, as well as a “Helping Hand” solution which is a combination of self-service and professional guidance.
From questions around child support and adoption, to divorce, separation, moving in with a partner, domestic abuse and LGBTQIA+ rights, AFLAS provides impartial guidance and connection to professional support and affordable resources to help people find clarity in confusing times.
“AFLAS has been created to be a triage service for these people in the first instance. A helping hand and a guide to point them in the right direction. From there, we can connect them with high-quality small business providers who can help. Whether it’s mortgage brokers, financial planners, lawyers or psychologists,” says Adam.
“Think of it as a parallel to the health system. When you’re unwell, you see your GP and they can then advise you on the course to follow and connect you with the right specialists. We’re doing the same for the legal and professional services industry, so that individuals, couples and families can be guided through the specialist service they need, without just making it up as they go along.”
Adam is no stranger to entrepreneurship, having started and sold successful businesses in the past, and he is a proudly proclaimed ‘socialist capitalist’ – driven by creating profitable businesses that also serve a social purpose.
“I don’t believe profit and purpose have to be mutually exclusive,” says Adam.
“I think as entrepreneurs and business owners we have a responsibility to make a positive impact on the world, but we can only do this if we’re building sustainable businesses that can afford to make a difference.”
AFLAS is welcoming new professional providers to join the platform from across Australia, as interest grows in the new platform:
“A large part of our unique concierge advocacy solution is pairing individuals with experienced, dedicated and reliable service providers that we trust will help them to successfully address their issues,” says Levine.
“To do this effectively, we partner with all sorts of experts, including family lawyers, psychologists, accountants, mediators, mortgage brokers, relationship counsellors, immigration advisors and property consultants. If you’re interested in getting involved, we’d love to hear from you.”
