11 hacks to prepare for a challenging 2024

After a year of challenges and widespread uncertainty, Adam Jelic, founder and director of goal-setting stationery brand MiGOALS, is calling on Australians to embrace 2024 as the “year of recalibration, simplicity, and preparation for bluer skies”.

As we navigate through these turbulent times, it’s crucial to recalibrate and step out of our default mode. We’ve all been swamped with negativity over the past few years, so it’s important to take a step back and reconnect with our inner selves in the new year. This is not just about survival; it’s about thriving through simplicity and discipline.

Like 2023, much of 2024 will be defined by stubbornly high inflation, cost-of-living pressures, rental shortages, and more. As record numbers of Australians experience mortgage and rental stress, the entrepreneur highlights the importance of mental health and self-care as a healthy coping mechanism.

To combat the pervasive sense of negativity and loss of control, Adam urges Aussies to embrace a mindset shift towards positive habit formation, self-awareness, and practical goal setting.

“During difficult times, it’s important to maintain a sense of perspective and hold onto the mantra of ‘this too shall pass’,” says Adam. Having dealt with his own struggles with anxiety and self-doubt, the founder believes taking one day at a time and going back to basics is the recipe for building resilience.

“Simplicity is key. When you’re overwhelmed, simplifying your life helps reduce mental clutter. Rather than entertain too many thoughts and worries, focus on removing unnecessary distractions and concentrate on what’s truly important,” says Adam.

Adam’s top tips for taking on 2024:

  1. Recalibrate your priorities – The need to realign our lives and priorities arises when competition for time, resources, and energy is scarce. Dig deep to find what’s important to you, whether it’s career advancement or time with the family or some other goal. This enhances clarity and purpose, so you know what is essential and what can be let go.
  2. Step out of default mode – 2024 should be a year of purpose rather than passive drifting. Actively engaging in life choices adds to your sense of urgency and wellbeing even when times are tough.
  3. Nix negative thoughts – Everyone has negative thoughts, but it’s how you deal with them that matters. Instead of ruminating, foster a mindset that focuses on positive outcomes and self-growth.
  4. Get back in tune with self-awareness – The maxim “know thyself” applies here. Cultivating a good understanding of your motivations and preferences is key to sparking meaningful changes.
  5. Embracing the year of survival and simplicity – Times of famine and feast are a part of life. Take the opportunity to practise resilience and work towards a better tomorrow.
  6. Control the controllables – Don’t get hung up over things out of your control. Turn your attention towards improving the areas of life that you do have influence over instead. This will help reduce stress and keep the mind occupied if you’re prone to anxiety.
  7. Find freedom through discipline – Creating positive new habits, working every day towards a bigger goal, and staying consistent over time is great for building discipline and confidence.
  8. Outsmart low motivation – Motivation doesn’t last forever but habits do. Automating as many important habits as possible is the smart way to stay on track and smash goals.
  9. Plan goals logically – Key components of logical goal setting are setting realistic and achievable goals (SMART), establishing good habits, and taking it slow and steady to ensure you don’t end up skipping vital stages in the process.
  10. Don’t rely on hope – Having hope is great, but as a strategy, it does nothing concrete to help reach goals. In its place, make the emphasis on action – even small everyday tasks can build up over time to achieve great things.
  11. Use 2024 to prepare for better times and opportunities – 2024 is about laying the groundwork for better times and seizing opportunities as they arise with a well-thought-out plan.

“Just a simple change in mindset can act as a powerful tool for navigating periods of overwhelm,” says Adam. “Taking action puts the ball back into your hands, reduces stress, and enhances overall wellbeing. With practice comes a sense of optimism, confidence, hope, and a sense that you can find your way through anything no matter how hard it gets,” concludes Adam.
